Hackberry Trees

Hackberry is a common, fast-growing, medium sized tree that provides a minor nectar source in April to May. Hackberry can be confused with elm since the leaves are so similar. They can be differentiated from elm by the nipple galls on the underside of the leaves and the distinctive “witches broom”, which are caused by the tree’s response to a mite and fungus attack. The bark is gray and smooth on young trees, but becomes warty and ridge-like on older specimens.
