Tulip Trees and Honey
The tulip tree is the state tree of Indiana! Other names for this tree include yellow-poplar or tulip-poplar. It is our tallest and, in my opinion, most beautiful tree. The leaves are unique with 4 lobes and a glossy green finish. The flowers bloom in May to June and are large, greenish yellow, and have numerous stamens inside the petals. This is a sun loving tree that does not grow well in shade. Growth on a good site is fast, with the tree reaching up to 175 feet and living for up to 400 years. In areas of dense growth it is possible to obtain a monofloral tulip honey from the hive.
